VIU's Severe Weather Closure Procedures

If any of VIU’s campuses or regional facilities need to be closed due to extreme weather conditions, the closure will be communicated to all students and employees in the following ways:

  1. Through the free VIU Safety App. If you don’t already have it, download it today on Android, iPhone and Blackberry. Among other safety related items the App posts current and expected weather conditions daily and will alert you when the campus is closed unexpectedly due to extreme weather or other related situations.
  2. A message will be posted on the emergency banner at the top of VIU's website www.viu.ca.
  3. A message will be posted to Twitter @viunews and @VIUniversity.
  4. A message will be posted to VIU Facebook and VIU Facebook News and Events pages.
  5. A media advisory will be sent to all local and regional media.
  6. An email message will be sent from University Relations to employees and students.
  7. Signs will be posted at the Nanaimo campus on the entrances of the Library, Bookstore, Theatre and Welcome Centre advising that classes are cancelled, and services are closed.
  8. Information will be updated as appropriate throughout the day.

Every effort will be made to communicate these messages by 6 am on the day of the closure. Please check your junk email folders to ensure that email messages have not been filed there.

There may be times when weather conditions change quickly and a decision to close the campus will need to be made after 6 am. The most up-to-date information will be found on VIU’s Safety App and main website: www.viu.ca.

Accessing ITAS Infrastructure from Outside of Classrooms

A VPN tunnel into the ITAS network has been created. This will allow user access from outside of the ITAS network to ITAS resources such as the development server (dev.itas.ca) and student VMware ESXi servers.

Instructions for connecting to the VPN can be found at help.itas.ca.

!!! WARNING !!!

While connected to the ITAS VPN, users must use technology resources in ways that uphold all federal, provincial, and local laws and regulations.

Users are required to meet expectations and standards of professional and ethical behaviour that go beyond the requirements of law.

VIU Policy 45.01 Use of Information Technology applies at all times while connected to the ITAS VPN.
